If you're thinking about trying freediving (or apnea diving) in Bali, I can only say: Go for it! Tulamben, in the northeast of the island, is a real insider tip – it's home to one of Southeast Asia's most famous shipwrecks: the USAT Liberty Wreck . And that was exactly my goal during my first freediving course.
🐠 Why freediving in Bali?
Bali is not only the island of the gods, but also a paradise for freedivers. Warm water, tropical coral reefs, a relaxed community, and countless spots you can explore without a tank. For me, as a beginner, this was the perfect mix of adventure and inner peace.
What I didn't know before: Freediving is much more than just "holding your breath and diving down." It's a journey to yourself—and sometimes to your limits.
🌍 Why Tulamben?
Tulamben is a small fishing village on Bali's east coast, quiet, pristine – and simply spectacular underwater.
The star attraction here is the Liberty Shipwreck , an American cargo ship sunk during World War II, which today resembles a colorfully overgrown reef garden. Its proximity to the shore makes it the perfect spot for freediving—without a boat.
🚢 The Liberty Wreck – A dream for freedivers
My first glimpse underwater was magical: corals of every color, huge schools of fish, swimming turtles—all against the backdrop of a weathered, partially overgrown wreck. I was immediately captivated.
What makes the wreck particularly exciting:
-
Entry directly from the beach
-
Good visibility, often over 20 meters
-
Depths from 5 m to over 30 m (perfect for beginners & advanced divers)
-
Often encounters with schools of mackerel, barracudas or even a Napoleon fish
🫁 My experience as a freediving beginner
Honestly? The first few meters were a challenge. Equalizing the pressure, in particular, was really hard for me at first. Looking back, this was mainly due to tension in my neck area.
My tip:
👉 Stretch well beforehand, especially in the shoulder and neck area.
👉 Or treat yourself to a massage the day before – it worked wonders for me!
Over time, it got better. By the end of my course, I was at 20 meters—and it felt like flying underwater.

🧭 Conclusion: Freediving at the Liberty Wreck – an unforgettable experience
For me, this place was the perfect introduction to freediving. Not just because the conditions are ideal, but because it's simply beautiful. The wreck is like an underwater playground where you can slowly get used to it.
And even if you struggle with equalizing pressure or “coming down” at the beginning – believe me: It’s worth it!
